We want players who want to play for Stour I hear. Well surely out of 49 registered players signed this season, surely 15 or so want to play?!
Im sick of hearing the old lines from the management. Im sure they dont believe what theyre saying themselves and just doing it for the benefit of us fans.
A few weeks ago GH said were on the right tracks now. Since then we have lost three games and the performances have been shocking. In the past I have witnessed bad teams at Stour and bad performances at much lower levels than we currently play. But on these occasions it was understandable with little or no budget, and it was hard to bring in quality to improve us. We also had the FA regulations which meant promotion wasnt a possibility. There are no such excuses now.
I always look at a squad of players and ask the question, is the manager getting the most out of them? The answer at Stour is definitely not, and its been that way for sometime.
Last season we went backwards as far as league position was concerned on the previous season. We only got in the play-offs due to Poole having points deducted. This season we will be lucky to finish in top half. And no, this league is no harder than the Southern League.
So, why do we need to give GH more time? Next season cant be worse than this, but will it be good enough to get us at very least in the plsy-offs? No, it wont.
Another good post with points well made, there have been many well made points by a multitude of posters in the last 24 hours.
I liked Jane's post but i do wish people would stop using this line about "agendas",i suffered the same slur by TRM a few weeks ago and i don't think it's necessary.
I think most people who contribute on here have the same "agenda",this is mine just for the sake of clarity.
When we started getting our two promotions it is important that facts are faced,we are now at what would traditionally be classed as Stourbridge FC'c "base level",i've commented previously that we are not at some fantastic, unnatural high for the club, this is the minimum level we should expect any manager to have us at based on history and our average attendance level.
The cup runs have been Gary's crowning glory,an achievement that will be forever remembered and part of the Stourbridge legend and possibly the reason that the grumblings have taken this long to manifest themselves.
From my own point of view i see two ways for a club of our size to operate.
1/ We go back to our previous model of identifying young local talent like we did 6 or 7 years ago and we accept that we are a local side for local people.
I remember our first year back in the Southern Prem, relegation always loomed yet the support was fantastic because the fan's could see mainly local lad's giving it their all.
Personally,i can live with this,if that's what our "model" is then lets go with it and stop messing around with the likes of Jordan Murphy and Morgan-Parker,instead of this fear of youth let's give it it's head and support it 100%.
2/ If not that model then we need to spend more on better players who are properly proven at our level and above and i don't mean the "journeymen" we've been attracting,i mean the Mackey type player who will cost but will generally guarantee a level of performance in a majority of matches.
I will forever maintain that the reluctance to splash out on a couple of quality ( at this level ) players, both last season and the season before have actually been the catalyst for the shambles we now find ourselves in.
The rule of thumb in football has always been that you strengthen when you're in a good position,i think we failed miserably to do this last season, another quality striker was needed to support Benbow and his Easter time injury came back to haunt us.
It's hard to know whether it was due to loyalty to the squad that Gary didn't push for more quality,a reluctance of the board to sanction more quality or stubbornness to prove fan's wrong when a lot were suggesting we were a couple of signing's short of claiming promotion.
From my point of view i can live with Stour being at this level but there is one caveat to that,i want to watch the side playing fast moving, pass and move football and not the utter rubbish we've played this season, there is no excuse for what's being served up,i'd rather go down to defeat having tried to play rather than witnessing aimless hoof ball.
To be honest i hope the end of season brings about a wind of change at Amblecote with very few players being retained,i'd like to see Billingham offered a new contract regardless of his injury status,i think we owe him at least that much,i also want to see Leon,Will,Loui Harris and JMP retained as a nucleus but much of the rest needs to be shown the door.
I'd also look to bring one or two of the older faces we have lost in recent times back to the club to stabilise things whilst a new crop of youngsters are brought through,i think fan's want to see players in the shirt who really do care for the club.
