A thoroughly entertaining game with both teams looking good going forward and going for goals right till the final whistle. Five good goals ( and a simple tap in), both teams hitting the woodwork and having efforts cleared off the line plus watching Sean Geddes turn out for his 5th club this season. Perhaps the defending could have been better , but hey, who cares, it was enjoyable. We just about shaded it to deserve to win on penalties, credit to Ash Malhotra, who after a shaky start made a good save second half and saved 2 penalties out of 4.

Man of the Match voting was as follows:

CONNER GATER 5 votes

Lewis Probert 3

Stuart Pierpoint 2

Junior Smikle } 1
Drew Canavan

HUGH CLARK won the wine.

Thanks to everyone who took part.

A fun evening of entertainment - the team selection made Gary's view on the value of the league cup clear - albeit I can't recall ever having such a strong bench for a game!

Both sides had chances to win the game comfortably and the only surprise was only 6 goals were scored!

Archer finished well for our first (after Malhotra had already fumbled a shot onto the post already and O'Callaghan had hit the bar) and then a minute later Archer and Hague combined really well and the latter played a lovely reverse pass to Drew who finished well for 2-0.

We then had a silly ten minute period. Malhotra was at fault for the first and third goal, when he was beaten far too easily, but the second was an absolute screamer. All this in a ten minute period that also included Sean Geddes getting sent off for putting a hand into the face of Archer!

Second half we started well with Pierpoint volleying into the top corner to equalise. After that we had more of the play with a fair few chances being created - notably we had a header cleared off the line, and we also hit the post.

O'Callaghan should have won it in stoppage time for Sutton but hit it straight at Malhotra, who redeemed himself somewhat with two good saves in the second half.

He redeemed himself even more in the shoot out, with two penalty saves, albeit hit straight at him. Our penalties were all superb and gave their keeper little or no chance to save them.

Onwards to the second round. Not sure if we will take it any more seriously but its a competition we can do well in!
